Dr. Shawn Riley, Parish Storrs Lovejoy Professor in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, and a core faculty member in the Center for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies, was recently awarded a Fulbright Multi-Visit Specialist grant at the Swedish University of Agricultural Science in Umeå.  The political and practical aspects of conservation in Sweden, Scandinavia, and around the world are changing with societal values.  The Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Environmental Sciences has asked Dr. Riley to help build capacity for multi-disciplinary graduate education.  The department at Umeå has relied upon a traditional curriculum steeped in wildlife ecology, but would like to meet the evolving demands of society for broader expertise in conservation sciences by diversifying their curricula.  Dr. Riley spent 2009-2010 in Sweden as a Senior Fulbright Fellow studying the evolution of wildlife governance systems in Scandinavia compared to those in the United States.
